Imposter

Imposter syndrome, that sneaky inner voice.

Imposter syndrome is that sneaky inner voice that says, “You’re not good enough,” or “You don’t really deserve your success.” It’s more common than you might think and can strike at any stage of life, whether you’re taking on a new role, navigating career changes, or even considering a fresh direction in life. The good news is that you can quiet that voice and step into your confidence with simple, actionable strategies.

What is Imposter syndrome?

Imposter syndrome is the feeling that your success is undeserved, that you’re a fraud just waiting to be found out, despite clear evidence of your competence. This self-doubt can be crippling and often leads to unnecessary stress, anxiety, and holding back from new opportunities.

In my coaching work with both men and women, I’ve seen these feelings surface. Whether stepping into leadership, returning to work after a break, taking life in a new direction or at other times for what seems like no reason at all. Interestingly, imposter syndrome is also closely tied to our physical wellbeing. When we’re out of balance – think poor sleep, lack of movement, or unhealthy eating or lifestyle habits – our mental resilience dips, making it easier for that inner critic to take hold. Life stages like menopause can also bring additional challenges, amplifying self-doubt and impacting our mental and emotional wellbeing.

How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome: Actions You Can Take Today.

  • Recognise and Name It. The first step to overcoming imposter syndrome is recognising when it’s happening. Acknowledge those thoughts for what they are – just thoughts, not facts. By naming them, you begin to take back control.
  • Shift Your Perspective. Challenge those unhelpful beliefs by focusing on the facts. Keep a list of your achievements, the skills you’ve built, and positive feedback you’ve received. When self-doubt creeps in, revisit this list to remind yourself of what you’re truly capable of.
  • Prioritise Your Physical Wellbeing. Your physical health and mental resilience are deeply connected. When you’re getting enough sleep, staying active, and fueling your body with nutritious choices, you’re better equipped to face challenges with confidence. Small, consistent habits can make a big difference in keeping that imposter voice at bay.
  • Share Your Experience. Imposter syndrome thrives in silence. Talking openly about it with a trusted friend, mentor, or coach can help you gain perspective. Often, you’ll discover others have similar stories, which can be a powerful reminder that you’re not alone.
  • Accept That Perfection is a Myth. Perfectionism and imposter syndrome often go hand in hand. Remind yourself that no one gets it right 100% of the time. Embracing mistakes as learning opportunities helps you develop resilience and move forward more confidently.
  • Own Your Successes. Start taking ownership of your achievements. Instead of attributing them to luck or external factors, recognise the effort, skill, and persistence you’ve put in. You’re where you are because of you.

How Coaching Can Help.

Coaching offers a supportive space to explore and challenge the root causes of imposter syndrome. Through a thought provoking and creative process, coaching helps you build self-awareness and develop the confidence to push past those limiting beliefs, maximising your personal and professional potential.

In my coaching practice, I’ve worked with clients facing big life and career transitions, often at times when their confidence is at a low. Through coaching conversations, practical tools, and a focus on holistic wellbeing, clients can see their own value more clearly and take action toward their goals without the constant self-doubt.
